Job Description

We are seeking someone with extraordinary organizational skills and attention to detail to oversee the daily operations of our newly built amphioxus marine facility and laboratory at Genentech. To our knowledge, this is the first marine facility of its kind ever built in the U.S. Thus, this represents a unique and exciting opportunity to help develop approaches that allow the husbandry of challenging-to-breed and cultivate marine invertebrates in captivity and the reproduction of their natural marine environment in a dry lab. Our facility consists of four interconnected but different marine ecosystems that need to be maintained independently. Attention to detail in ever-evolving natural ecosystems and preparedness to take rapid action in life-threatening circumstances is essential for this role. The successful candidate will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the marine facility, including inspecting levels of reverse osmosis water, artificial seawater and natural seawater loops, pipes and reservoirs, light and temperature systems, amphioxus racks and bioreactors, and water chemistry.
  • Manage the scheduling and coordination of seawater arrivals and departures, production of artificial seawater, production of plankton, and refilling of our microalgae collection.
  • Develop and oversee a maintenance schedule for all facility equipment and infrastructure.
  • Coordinate repairs and upgrades as necessary.
  • Implement and monitor safety procedures and plans of action in response to alarms generated by the facility.
  • Manage the production of plankton.
  • Maintain accurate records of facility operations, including logs, reports, and inventories.
  • Maintain stocks of spare parts and consumables.
  • Assist in developing animal protocols and standard operating procedures according to the ever-evolving ecosystem in the facility.
  • Provide assistance to all facility users, addressing inquiries and resolving issues promptly.
  • Collaborate across organizations involved in the maintenance and operation of the aquatic facilities.
  • Prepare and present regular reports on facility performance to senior management.

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate would have a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science, Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field in life sciences

Other skills:

  • Knowledge of marine research methods and marine ecosystems or aquaculture would be highly appreciated.
  • Excellent communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, as needed.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including the ability to lift weight.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
